Med forslaget oprettes Det Europæiske Asylstøttekontor, der får til opgave at lette og styrke det praktiske samarbejde mellem EU-landene på asylområdet samt at bidrage til en bedre gennemførelse af det fælles asylsystem.
Asylkontoret vil skulle arbejde tæt sammen med UNHCR og EU's Agentur for Grundlæggende Rettigheder.
Asylkontoret finansieres over EU-budgettet. De anslåede finansielle omkostninger er 40,25 mio. EUR for perioden fra 2010-2013.
